Summer semester seminar at Frauenwörth Abbey on Lake Chiemsee

This year, Professor Dr. Marc Bungenberg's chair once again held its traditional summer semester seminar at Frauenwörth Abbey on the Fraueninsel on Lake Chiemsee.

As part of the Jean Monnet Chair's events, the seminar focused on issues relating to the rule of law in the areas of international economic law, European law and the law of alternative dispute resolution.

The participants discussed EU economic sanctions against the backdrop of the current geopolitical world situation and exchanged in stimulating discussions views on whether the EU may use frozen assets for reconstruction purposes or whether the imposition of secondary sanctions is covered by Union law. In addition, the participants dealt with the Anti-Coercion Instrument, the Carbon Border Tariff and the possibilities of reviewing outbound investments.

Topics relating to international investment protection and world trade law were also discussed, e.g., the question of the scope of the security exception in Art. XXI GATT. The scope of the state's regulatory interest in international investment law was also the subject of the students' contributions. Of particular topicality was the examination of the interplay between EU economic sanctions and international investment protection law.

In addition to the stimulating academic exchange, the participants also had the opportunity to enjoy the picturesque surroundings of Lake Chiemsee in perfect early summer weather. An excursion to the Herreninsel allowed for a guided tour of Ludwig II's impressive “new Herrenchiemsee Palace”, which was intended to be a replica of the Palace of Versailles. The visit to the Herreninsel also provided an opportunity to reflect on German constitutional history, as it was on this island that the 1948 Constitutional Convention drew up a draft constitution that later had a significant influence on the design of the Basic Law for the Federal Republic of Germany.

All in all, another insightful seminar on Frauenchiemsee came to an end after four days.
