Regulation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Europe
In a digitalised world, how do we deal with the technological development of artificial intelligence? Attempts to provide an answer are quickly leading to legal challenges. Dynamic developments require a continuous adaptation of the legal framework. Accompanied by initial steps at national level, the EU made its first attempt at regulation this May with the AI Act. A Council of Europe Framework Convention on AI and Human Rights, Democracy and the Rule of Law is due to be signed in September.
The aim of the symposium is to analyse the current challenges in dealing with AI in European Union law and European international law. The focus may be on issues of constitutional law, fundamental rights or data protection law where current problems are identified and possible solutions developed.
The following list of topics makes suggestions, but is by no means exhaustive. Contributions on the regulation of AI in Europe with a different focus are also welcome.
- AI and the ECHR
- The new Council of Europe Framework Convention on AI and Human Rights, Democracy and the Rule of Law
- New and old forms of discrimination by AI
- Data protection and AI: the collection of personal data by AI-based systems
- AI and European competition law: competition for AI and competition via AI
- The regulation of AI by the EU: scope and limits of EU competences
- Cyber security and potential threats posed by AI
- Artificial intelligence as author or creator? – Issues in IP law
- Elections in a democratic Europe: AI as an opportunity or a potential threat?
