Professor Rainer M. Bierwagen is a Partner of Beiten Burkhardt in Brussels and has practised European law in Brussels since 1989. His practice areas are International and European Antitrust and Trade Law, State Aid, Mergers and Acquisitions and he has assisted companies in many competition and trade cases in the administrative phase and before the courts in litigation. He advises companies in Europe, the Americas and Asia active in various industrial and service sectors.

Born in Weinheim/Germany in 1957, he received his legal education at the Universities of Heidelberg/Germany, Geneva/Switzerland and Freiburg/Germany. He holds a law degree with honours in 1981 and was awarded Doctor of Laws with honours in 1989. After his position as a Research fellow at the University of Konstanz, 1986-1989, he was admitted to the Bar of Berlin and of Brussels. He is also a Médiateur agréé en droit civil et commercial and was appointed Honorary Professor by the Saarland University.
He is a frequent lecturer and author on issues involving competition and trade law and State aid.
