Since September 2019, the Europa-Institut of Saarland University is a member of the Erasmus+ Strategic Partnership LAWGEM - New Quality in Education for Gender Equality - Strategic Partnership for the Development of Master's Study Program LAW AND GENDER. The aim of this project is to establish a Master's degree program "Law and Gender" in order to contribute to gender mainstreaming in law, which is to be implemented either fully or in part by all consortium members.
In addition to the Europa-Institut, the consortium consists of five other universities from all regions of the European Union: LUMSA University Rome-Palermo (Italy), Orebro University (Sweden), University of Cadiz (Spain) and the University of Belgrade (Serbia). The project is led by the University of Belgrade as main partner.
The main focus is on the development of an innovative curriculum for a Master's program in gender-specific legal issues. This should cover all relevant areas of legal education and legal practice as well as areas of other disciplines. The focus will be on the economic analysis of law, criminology and social psychological research and knowledge areas.
The agenda also includes the creation of various learning materials relevant to the Master's program in Law and Gender, as well as the establishment of a Legal Clinic in this area. All these results should help to raise awareness of gender equality and improve the knowledge and practice necessary to combat all forms of gender discrimination, violence and sexual harassment.

The project aims to contribute to socially inclusive higher education and improve the quality of legal education in Europe and elsewhere. The need for a gender-sensitive approach to legal education arises from the need for appropriate knowledge and skills in a legal and non-legal working environment in relation to gender mainstreaming in all relevant areas of policy, law-making and law enforcement in the judiciary, decision-making in state administration, state/regional/local policy-making in relation to the economy, social security, media, culture and in relation to academic gender-sensitive knowledge production in the legal, social and human sciences.
The implementation of the Master's program LAW AND GENDER is intended to provide in-depth knowledge of the reasons for gender mainstreaming in law, economics and politics of the European Union and its member and accession countries. The final result of this project should also be the expansion of practical knowledge regarding the implementation of gender equality through legal clinics focusing on anti-discrimination and the fight against gender-based violence and sexual harassment. The consortium also hopes to gain deeper insights into the relations between the EU and third countries, as well as international organisations, leading to the production of gender-sensitive strategic and normative documents. Finally, it also hopes to contribute to the introduction and development of gender-sensitive legal studies at universities in the EU and the accession countries, especially in Serbia.
Textbook "Gender-Competent Legal Education" in the series "Springer Textbooks in Law" published by Springer-Verlag
The textbook “Gender-Competent Legal Education”, co-edited and partly co-authored by Prof. Dr. Thomas Giegerich and Dr. Mareike Fröhlich together with Prof. Dr. Dragica Vujadinovic from the University of Belgrade, has just been published by Springer Publishers in the series “Springer Textbooks in Law”. Julia Jungfleisch was Assistant Editor.
It is the first textbook of its kind to take a fresh look at all important areas of law from a gender perspective in 19 chapters on over 700 pages. It is preceded by a general part on comparative legal history, feminist political theory and legal theory, sociology of law, feminist judgments and gender research and feminist methodologies.
The textbook is intended to support gender mainstreaming in legal education worldwide, which has so far been primarily “malestreamed”.
The authors, who have backgrounds in law and social sciences, research and teach at the University of Belgrade (Serbia), the University of Cadiz (Spain), LUMSA University in Palermo (Italy), Örebro University (Sweden) and Saarland University (Germany).
The textbook is an important intellectual output of a joint Erasmus+ project launched in 2019 under the name New Quality in Education for Gender Equality – Strategic Partnership for the Development of Master’s Study Program “Law and Gender” – LAWGEM.
