"An Introduction into American Law + Mock Trial" in January 2025 - Register now!
Are you interested in the U.S. American legal system? In this case, you should participate in our lecture: „An Introduction into American Law & Mock Trial“ on 9 January (10 a.m.-1 p.m.) and 22 January (2-6 p.m.) 2025. In cooperation with the 21st Theater Support Command of the US Forces, Ramstein Air Base, the Europa-Institut will offer a Comparative Law Introduction to the legal system of the USA and the Rule of Evidence in American Courts.
After the introduction, there will be a mock trial where the participants will have the opportunity to apply their theoretical knowledge. Mock Trials are simulated court proceedings for teaching and training purposes which should correspond to a real situation as much as possible. They are very common in English-speaking countries. In the U.S., Mock Trials take place during many stages of legal training, often in a competitive way. The focus is on practical relevance, exercise and the understanding of procedural problems as well as the acquisition of basic skills which will be relevant later on during the professional life.
District of Columbia versus Martha Monroe
Your challenge: participate actively in solving the legal issues of an American criminal case. Do so either by presenting the arguments and examining witnesses as an attorney, by participating as a witness or by rendering the verdict as a member of the jury. All necessary information will be provided and you will receive help from experienced lawyers.
The case: Martha Monroe shot her husband while he was sleeping on June 17, 2023 and later admitted to the crime when interviewed by the police. However, she now claims that she acted in self defense and suffered from “battered women syndrome.” The evidence shows that her husband beat her repeatedly prior to the shooting. How will the jury decide?
In our Mock Trial, the participants will take on the roles of witnesses, lawyers or jury members. A prior preparation is not necessary. The participants will obtain all relevant information directly during the event.
The participants will obtain a confirmation of participation. No previous legal knowledge of U.S. law is needed, but sufficient English language skills are required.
Place: Main Lecture Hall (Room 3.08/3.09) at the Europa-Institut (Building B2 1)
