What is a Deutschlandstipendium ("Germany scholarship")?
Deutschlandstipendien ("Germany scholarships") are awarded within the framework of a support programme of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. They are financed half by the Federal Government and half by private sponsors. By co-financing these scholarships, the Federal Government aims to contribute to establishing a scholarship culture in Germany.
Scholarship holders receive 300 euros per month for one year. Every year Saarland University, with the support of theStudienStiftungSaar, awards the German scholarships for which students of the Master's program at the Europa-Institut can also apply.
In 2020, three Deutschlandstipendien ("Germany scholarships") will be awarded to students of the Europa-Institut. One of them will be funded by the alumni association EVER e.V., another by the StudienStiftungSaar itself and all three will be joined by the new "Georg Ress Germany Scholarship" this year.
The Europa-Institut together with its students, former and current directors and staff as well as friends and supporters of the institute initiated a so-called Deutschlandstipendium in honor of Torsten Stein. The "Deutschlandstipendium Torsten Stein" supports talented and committed students of the Europa-Institut and honors Professor Stein's commitment to the Europa-Institut. On the occasion of the 85th birthday of Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Georg Ress, the Europa-Institut, together with students and friends of Georg Ress, former and current directors and staff of the Europa-Institut, and with the help of private sponsors, has initiated a Germany Scholarship in honor of the long-time director. This scholarship is intended to honor his many years of commitment to the Institute.
Professor Ress was, among other things, a lecturer at the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law in Heidelberg, director of the Europa-Institut at Saarland University and judge at the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg. His scientific achievements have been recognized with several honorary doctorates and he has received numerous other awards. You can find out more about Georg Ress here.
Sponsorship is provided to particularly talented and socially committed students of the Europa-Institut. They receive 300 euros per month for one year, with funding beginning in the winter semester of this year. The scholarship relieves the scholarship holders financially, allows them to concentrate on their studies, to be socially engaged and to establish numerous contacts for their later career during their studies at the Europa-Institut.
