Leisure Time and Cultural Highlights

With its 200.000 inhabitants, Saarbrücken is able to offer something special in many ways. The capital of the Saarland is situated within the heart of the European Union. "European" cities like Brussels, Luxembourg and Strasbourg lie within a range of 300 km. As a trade and fair center, Saarbrücken is closely connected to its European neighbors France and Luxembourg.

In terms of culture, Saarbrücken has something to offer to everyone: at the Saarländische Staatstheater ("Saarland State Theater"), you can enjoy plays, opera, musicals and ballet performances. For movie lovers there is a huge range of movies to pick from in our diverse cinemas which cater to different tastes. Annual artistic highlights include festivals such as the Max Ophüls Filmfestival, an international movie festival that enjoys Europe-wide recognition, and the "Festival Perspectives", where young French theater elates the spectators. Galleries and museums open their doors to the interested visitor throughout the year.

Culinary festivals also attract many visitors each year. Highlights are the Primeur-Weinfest, a wine festival, and the Altstadtfest, a festival in the historical part of the town, with culinary specialities, live music and events. Saarbrücken castle is also well worth a visit with its terraces that allow for an amazing view over the city.

The relaxed, almost Mediterranean atmosphere in the center of Saarbrücken is due to comfortable and inviting bars and cafés. One of the highlights is the so-called Saarbrücker Staden, a stretch of green along the river Saar, where you can relax and read a book or enjoy the view from one of the nice beer gardens.

Saarbrücken has a Zoo and a Wild Animal Park. The latter is also in close proximity to a High Rope Course in the forest.

You will find that many well-known bands play in Saarbrücken in locations such as the Saarbrücker E-Werk or the Garage.

For those of you who like to do some Shopping, there is the "Bahnhofstraße" in the city center. Good deals on designer labels can be found at the Style Outlets in Zweibrücken.
