About the library

The library was founded at Saarland University at the same time as the Europa-Institut in 1951. The library focuses especially on European Law and International Law. The available material, which is split thematically into the areas of European Integration, European Economic Law, Foreign Trade and Investment, International Dispute Resolution and European Protection of Human Rights, is extensive and up-to-date. In addition to the large volume of German, English and French sources, there are also numerous publications in the other official languages of the European Union and, increasingly, in the languages of the newest Member States.

Service
Guided library tours are offered on a regular basis in English and in German. The course "Information Competence" introduces students to researching electronic library catalogues, legal and European databases as well as introducing them to academic research and academic writing in general. The library offers eLearning modules on "Information Competence" and "Database research" which complement the course. It can be accessed via Clix.

Library Materials
Over 60,000 volumes, 150 periodicals and 40 loose-leaf publications are housed in our user-friendly and modern library. The literature is freely accessible and sorted systematically according to subject area in the Systematic Catalogue. The available books are listed in the Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) of Saarland University and State Library.

The borrowing of books is generally not permitted in order to give users direct and quick in-house access to the information they seek. The library makes an exception for students of the Europa-Institut, who can take short weekend loans from Saturday to Monday.

In addition to classic information sources such as textbooks, loose-leaf collections, reference books, dictionaries and periodicals (alph. Journal List and syst. Journal List), students also have access to extended essays and master' theses as well as to the most important electronic legal information sources, databases, online bibliographies and library catalogues.

IT Facilities
There are 40 work spaces in the library, spread across two bright and quiet reading rooms. Students have the opportunity to reserve their own workspace where they can work and research in a quiet, yet stimulating environment. Furthermore, students and guests at the Europa-Institut can use the 22 computers in the foyer of the library where they can access the internet.
