Prof. Dr. Werner Meng

Public Law, International Law and European Law, Former Director of the Europa-Institut

Professor Meng joined Professor Stein as director of the Europa-Institut in 1999. Professor Meng was holder of the chair for Public Law, International Law and European Law at Saarland University from 1999 until 2013. He studied at the Universities of Mainz and Lausanne (Switzerland) and was an academic researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Foreign Public and International Law in Heidelberg, as well as being active as a research scholar at the University of Michigan School of Law, Ann Arbor. He intermittently worked as a lawyer in Munich, as an adviser for the German Federal Ministry of Economy in Bonn and as a national expert for the European Commission in Brussels. Before coming to Saarbrücken, Prof. Dr. Meng taught at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg, where he was a professor of international law, European law, international economic law and German public law; director of the institute for economic law from 1997; and dean of the University of Halle in 1998/1999.

Prof. Dr. Meng is a guest professor at several institutions, including the Chicago-Kent College of Law, the World Trade Institute in Bern (Switzerland), Amsterdam Law School, University of Rijeka Law School (Croatia), Tulane Law School (New Orleans), Louisiana State University (Baton Rouge) and the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (Beijing). He is also a member of various organizations, such as the International Law Association, the German Society of International Law and the American Society of International Law. Prof. Dr. Meng is a co-editor of the Journal of International Economic Law (JIEL), the International Law Archives (Archiv des Völkerrechts (AVR)) and the Europa-Institut's Journal for European Studies (Zeitschrift für europarechtliche Studien (ZEuS)).
