The Europa-Institut as an institution has a more than six decade long history and it has always been a history of internationalization as well. The first director of the Europa-Institut, Prof. Dr. Joseph-François Angelloz, stated in 1951 as his vision for the further development of the Europa-Institut that it offers the opportunity to “research the Europe of the future, to teach young people educated in the traditional manner of each different country about Europe, to offer education from a uniform European perspective for students from these countries and, before long, to produce Europe´s next driving forces”. Much of this vision has become true at the Europa-Institut and it is still the foremost aim of the Europa-Institut to educate students, postgraduates and professionals in European and international law.

The Master's program

The Master's Program (LL.M.) in European and international law offered by the Europa-Institut is an outstanding opportunity for graduate students wanting to specialize in European and International Law. The curriculum is tailored to meet the demands on the European and international job market, and imparted by use of a range of teaching methods in order to convey both practical as well as theoretical knowledge. Moreover, students have the opportunity to take part in international negotiation courses, language courses offered at the Europa-Institut (German, English and French) as well as in moot courts, colloquiums, case studies and EUROSIM, a simulation of European decision processes. Courses and seminars encourage top level discussions and are led by academics who are familiar with actual practice, or by professionals who are ardent about theory.

The composition of both our student body and our lecturers emphasizes the internationality of the Europa-Institut. Each academic year, renowned lecturers from all over the world teach students from over 30 different countries. This diversity of nationalities allows for a polyglot and cross-cultural environment that extends beyond the study program into our alumni organization, EVER.

Combined with our optimal learning environment - exemplified, inter alia, by our excellently equipped Library and the therein established European Documentation Center (EDC), which contains all official publications of the European Union - and the ideal location of the Institute in the border triangle France-Luxembourg-Germany, the Master's program "European and International Law" offers regular excursions to cities of European significance and superb conditions for embarking upon a European and international career.

International cooperation

The Europa-Institut has an extensive network inside and outside the university. More than 5,000 students from all over the world have been educated within the fields of European and international law at the Europa-Institut since its foundation in 1951 and the alumni organization EVER e.V. consists of more than 800 members.

The Europa-Institut is supported in its activities by a number of associations such as the ASKO EUROPA-STIFTUNG, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and EVER e.V., the alumni organization of the Europa-Institut. Within Saarland University, the Europa-Institut works with the Business Department of the Europa-Institut (MBA School), the Faculty of Humanities and the Faculty of Law and Business. The Europa-Institut also enjoys a successful cooperation with many international universities, business partners and law firms.

The Europa-Institut is a member of the transnational consortium TACEUSS (Trans-Atlantic Consortium for European Union Simulations and Studies), to which, in addition to European Universities, various New York State Universities belong; the consortium hosts EUROSIM, a simulation of European decision-making processes in which the Europa-Institut regularly takes place. In cooperation with the ASKO-EUROPA-STIFTUNG the Europa-Institut organized a European Summer University for the first time in 2011 with the title “European Integration from different Perspectives at the Heart of Europe“ in which students from fifteen nations took part. Since then, there has been a Summer University each year. 2013, a first joint project between the Europa-Institut and the SEELS Network (Southern Eastern Europe Law Schools Network) took place which will be continued in 2014.
